EY appoints general counsel in legal reorganisation

Accountancy firm Ernst & Young (EY) has appointed Michael Solender as global vice chair and general counsel to carry out the global reorganisation of the EY legal function and integrate EY's internal legal operations worldwide.

Since 2009, he has served as EY's Americas vice chair and general counsel, as well as general counsel of Ernst & Young in the US.

Before that, he served as general counsel of major financial institutions, including The Bear Stearns Companies, and of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. He has also been a partner at the law firm Arnold & Porter and taught at Yale and Harvard Law Schools.

He will remain based in New York but will spend significant time with the executive team in London.

Solender will be succeeded as general counsel of Ernst & Young US by Ron Hauben. Hauben previously served as deputy general counsel of the firm for 10 years.

Prior to joining EY, Hauben performed a range of similar functions in the US and global general counsel's office at PwC. He has also been a partner at the law firm Bryan Cave.

Mark Weinberger, EY global chairman and chief executive officer, said: "In this unprecedented regulatory environment, and with cross-border business becoming increasingly complex, we are calling on Michael to lead EY's legal resources across the world. His guidance will help us continue to excel as a world-class, globally integrated organization."

Solender said: "I look forward to the opportunity to advise EY's leadership and head the legal function around the world. This opportunity comes at a pivotal time for EY as we implement our Vision 2020 plan to make EY the leading global professional services organization."
