Former Beazley director comes out of retirement to join Advent

Lloyd’s insurer Advent has appointed Jonathan Gray as consultant for its direct and facultative (D&F) property division.

The appointment is effective immediately, and Gray will report to Nigel Fitzgerald, chief executive officer.

Gray has over 40 years of underwriting experience, having most recently served as a director at Beazley, before his retirement in 2015. In this role he led the open market property underwriting team in London.

Gray has also served on the Beazley PLC board until June 2013 and is a non-executive director of AEGIS’ London board, which he joined in February 2016.

Gray began his insurance career at the CE Heath Syndicate in 1973.

Fitzgerald said: “Jonathan brings an exceptional level of underwriting experience to Advent. His contribution to the market has been immense and he will reinforce our D&F property offering by providing us with unparalleled insight and expertise in the sector. I am very pleased to welcome him to Advent and I am certain that our D&F business will continue to go from strength to strength under his guidance.”

Gray added: “Today’s marketplace is undoubtedly difficult, however we have been here before and I believe we can underwrite successfully by working closely with our clients and London broking partners. In addition Advent has some unique advantages through its relationship with the Fairfax Group and I am excited to be part of what is a well thought out long term strategy.”
