hubb poaches Munich Re insurtech exec to 'reimagine the commercial broking space'

hubb, the UK-based insurance broker that charges customers on a usage basis, has appointed a new chairman.

Andrew Rear, who was formerly chief executive officer (CEO) of Digital Partners, a Munich Re company, takes up his post at hubb, which recently received authorisation from the Financial Conduct Authority. He assumes responsibility for shaping its business investment and growth strategy.

Rear has almost 30 years of experience in the insurance market and was responsible for Munich Re’s insurtech partnerships, with more than 20 different digital insurance brands. He was also formerly CEO of Munich Re’s life insurance businesses across Asia, Africa and the UK.

In his new role Rear joins an advisory board of Peter Harvey, the former Barclays CEO for corporate and commercial banking; Richard Jones, the former Crown Agents Bank Group CEO; Suhail Ahmad; and Stuart Middleton.

hubb CEO Mark Costello emphasised Rear’s former experience overseeing successful digital-first insurtech businesses. He “will be invaluable in shaping the future of hubb as we aim to reimagine the commercial broking space,” Costello said.

Rear noted that, for many business owners, insurance is opaque and expensive. “hubb is using technology and AI to put the customer in control,” he said.
