Hurricane Lorenzo hits mid-Atlantic Azores Islands and prompts warnings in Ireland

Hurricane Lorenzo is hitting the mid-Atlantic Azores Islands with heavy rain, powerful winds and high waves, according to media reports, which say the remnants of the storm will hit the UK and Ireland tomorrow (Thursday).

The UK’s Met Office has issued 150 flood warnings as Lorenzo approaches the UK bringing torrential showers and strong gales on Thursday.

The Irish Met office has also issued multiple warnings. It said that storm surges are likely to cause coastal flooding and damage and has advised residents of the counties of Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick to prepare heavy weather over the coming days.

Lorenzo was previously a Category 5 hurricane. It has weakened to Category 2, but it is still set to cause considerable damage to the Azores.

BBC Weather Europe said: “It is still quite a significant storm and it is heading towards the Azores arriving during Wednesday, bringing huge storm surge and heavy rain.”
