KaylaRe launch triggers management changes at Enstar and StarStone

The launch of the $620 million total return reinsurer KaylaRe has triggered numerous changes at both Enstar, the main backer of the new venture, and StarStone, its global underwriting subsidiary.

Nick Packer, the co-founder of Enstar who has served as the company’s executive vice president and joint chief operating officer since 2001, has been appointed as chief executive of KaylaRe. Packer, who also gives up the role of group CEO of specialty insurer StarStone, remains as a non-executive director on the StarStone board.

The gap this has left in Enstar has been filled by Orla Gregory who has been appointed as COO of Enstar. She has served as the chief integration officer since 2015. Prior to that, Gregory was the executive vice president, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and has held other senior roles in last 13-years at Enstar.

Paul O’Shea, another co-founder and the vice president and joint COO of Enstar, has been promoted to become the president of the company, and executive chairman StarStone.

Paul Brockman, the CEO of Enstar US, and David Atkins, the CEO of Enstar EU and global head of claims, have been tasked to take on broader responsibility for firm’s insurance and legacy activity, including oversight of claims, commutations, and ceded reinsurance.

Demian Smith, who most recently served as CEO of StarStone’s international segment and chairman of its underwriting committee, has been named group CEO of StarStone.
David Message has been appointed as the chief underwriting officer of StarStone.

Dominic Silvester, CEO of Enstar, said: “I am pleased to announce these appointments today, which signal the robust capabilities, diverse industry experience and collective strength of Enstar’s leadership team.

“I look forward to working with this talented group as we lead Enstar toward further growth and success.”
