Liberty Mutual mines Aspen for commercial & specialty chief risk officer

Liberty Mutual has plucked the chief risk officer from Aspen to take the parallel seat in its own commercial and specialty re/insurance unit Global Risk Solutions (GRS).

Crystal Ottaviano has been tasked with crafting “differentiated global risk expertise capabilities” for what Liberty Mutual believes can be a “forward-thinking, risk-aware underwriting mindset.”

Ottaviano brags of a 25-year career in risk management. Prior to her two and a half years at Aspen, she spent eight years with Swiss Re, rising to take the CRO post at the unit Swiss Reinsurance America Corp. She also served as head of risk management at the US unit of Hiscox and can brag of time served at Legg Mason and Benfield.

GRS chief financial officer Alison Erbig commented: “Given today’s tremendously complex and interconnected risk environment, a CRO’s key function in implementing and maintaining comprehensive risk frameworks and fostering a strong risk culture has never been more important. Crystal plays a vital role in helping deliver superior underwriting performance by creating these frameworks to drive risk-informed decisions. I’m delighted to have her join my team and bring her tremendous risk leadership to GRS.”
