Markel taps Liberty Specialty talent to drive PI expansion plan

Specialist insurer  Markel International has hired a Liberty underwriter as part of its expansion plans to drive further growth and investment in its professional indemnity (PI) portfolio.

Michael Briggs (pictured) joins Markel as a PI underwriter, based in its London office. He will report to Duncan Sinnott, senior underwriter of professional indemnity and telecommunications, media, and technology (TMT) at Markel International.

In his new underwriting role, Briggs will help develop Markel's PI portfolio, supporting the underwriting team, and building client relationships. His main focus will be on the organisation’s traditional portfolio, which includes solicitors, financial services, and miscellaneous business.

Briggs has eight years of experience in the insurance industry, spending the first five of them in claims at indemnity solutions provider, Collegiate, and his last three underwriting at Liberty Specialty Markets (LSM). He also has a legal background.

“At Markel, we are seeking continued profitable growth into 2022,” said Sinnott. “Michael’s appointment reflects our continued investment in our PI portfolio and commitment to remain as a leading market in our specialised areas. Michael comes from a claims and underwriting background, so he will add a new perspective and dynamic to the team.”

Briggs commented: “I am delighted to be joining Markel’s professional indemnity team as a PI underwriter. Markel has a reputation for its collaborative and forward-thinking environment, which is why it was important for me to secure this role.”
