PERILS confirms final industry loss for extratropical cyclone Dennis
Catastrophe insurance data provider PERILS has released its fourth and final industry loss footprint for extratropical cyclone Dennis (Victoria), which affected the British Isles and north-western Europe from February 15 to 17, 2020.
The storm, which occurred only six days after extratropical cyclone Sabine (Ciara, Elsa), caused insured property market loss of €350 million, based on loss data collected from affected insurers.
PERILS’ final estimate is slightly up from the previous loss estimate released in August 2020 of €344 million.
According to the report, the majority of insurance losses occurred in the UK, France, Belgium and Germany.
In addition to damage caused by strong winds, Dennis also brought heavy rainfall which aggravated the ongoing floods in the UK triggered by heavy precipitation brought by the Sabine (Ciara) low pressure system a week earlier.
Dennis was the thirteenth notable storm of a very active 2019–20 European windstorm season. It originated over the US and initially consisted of multiple low-pressure vortices.
