QBE Re eyes growth in Sub Saharan Africa with new hire

QBE Re has hired a new head of Africa as it targets expansion of the business in that continent beyond the North African region it has traditionally focused on.

Attilio Tornetta becomes head of Africa at QBE Re and from April 1 is responsible for all new treaty business. He is based in Dubai and reports to Houcine Zouaoui, head of treaty for the Middle East and Africa.

Tornetta joins from MGA Fourteenzerofive where he was lead underwriter. He has more than a decade of experience in the African market, having led the Sub-Saharan African business at Aspen Re and Swiss Re.

Abdallah Balbeisi, senior executive officer for Middle East and Africa at QBE Re, said: “Our appetite includes the selective writing of proportional multi line and bouquets as well as XOL business, offering a wide range of products across property, casualty and specialty lines of business.”
