Gallo succeeds Philip Fasano, who has resigned from the company to pursue other opportunities, the company said. Fasano joined AIG in September 2014.

Peter Hancock, president and CEO, said: "Martha is a highly experienced business leader, having held a number of senior roles leading technology teams prior to joining AIG. She has a proven track record of delivering measurable, sustainable results to drive business performance.

"Technology investment and implementation remains a key priority as we focus on bringing new innovations to our clients to help them face their most pressing challenges."

He added: "Phil elevated our ambitions and approach to technology, as well as making significant improvements in AIG's IT capabilities during his time with the company. He also helped bring together a highly talented technology team whose efforts have begun transforming the way we work, and have enabled our businesses to compete more effectively. I want to extend our sincere appreciation to Phil for his leadership and partnership."
