International speaker faculty for FIDES

The 38th Western Hemisphere Insurance Conference, held by the Inter-American Federation of Insurance Companies (FIDES), is set to be an interesting and international affair, with professionals from 41 countries coming together to discuss all things re/insurance.

A trio of keynotes

Luis Alberto Moreno, a former president of the Inter-American Development Bank, will deliver a keynote speech to attendees.

Between 2005 and 2020, Moreno served as president of the bank, leading an agenda to modernise the institution. Now he is a board member of the World Economic Forum and International Olympic Committee.

Also to deliver a keynote speech is Nobel Prize-winning economist and professor Paul Krugman.

Krugman won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2008 for his work on international trade and economic geography and was ranked as one of the 50 most influential people in global finance by Bloomberg in 2011.

Former UK prime minister Tony Blair, who served as prime minister from 1997 to 2007, rounds out the trio of keynote speeches.

A focus on sustainability

Aside from keynotes, the meeting will feature specific discussions in eight thematic areas, all based on the central theme of “insurance for a more sustainable world”.
The panels will start with a session on global insurance trends, aimed at providing an update on the priorities and trends across the sector.

Panellists also plan to discuss the impact of new technologies and innovations in the market on the sustainability agenda. It will feature panellists from Universal Health Monitor, Munich Re, IRB (Re), EY, Bradesco Seguros Group and Aon.

Alessandro Octaviani, the head of Brazil’s insurance regulator, Brazilian Private Insurance Regulatory Agency (SUSEP), will join the second panel on digital transformation. He is joined by panellists from Allianz Commercial Latin America, software company eBaotech, and Porto Seguro.

A panel session on environmental, social and corporate governance issues (ESG) on September 26 will tackle whether the ESG agenda impacts the competitiveness and efficiency of the insurance industry.

Barbara Buchner, global managing director at Climate Policy Initiative—who has been ranked among the 20 most influential women when it comes to climate change and one of the 100 most influential people on climate policy—is named as a panellist in the session. David Legherhe, chief executive officer of LatAm at Prudential; and Kaspar Mueller, president of reinsurance in Latin America at Swiss Re, round out the panel.

Closely following the ESG panel will be a session on cybersecurity, highlighting strategies to keep track of modernisation while managing cyber risk scenarios.

Justice Ricardo Villas Bôas Cueva of the Brazilian Superior Court of Justice will join executives from Fitch Ratings, BOXX Insurance and the Insurance and Reinsurance Innovation Institute on the panel.

From ESG to regulation to and digital transformation, there’s plenty of options for attendees to learn and discuss trends in the industry.
