Markel poaches senior underwriter from Beazley

Specialist insurer Markel International has appointed Gordon Lam as a senior professional and financial risks underwriter.

Lam joins Markel from Beazley, where he was an underwriting manager. Prior to that, he was a senior development/special projects manager with Citystate Asia Pacific Insurance.

Lam will be based in Singapore initially and is expected to relocate to the Hong Kong office in due course. He will join the team early next year and will work closely with Simon Moi, head of PFR, to manage and underwrite financial lines and casualty business in the Asian region.

Matt Cannock, managing director for Asia, said: “Gordon’s appointment is significant for our PFR team as we grow our underwriting capabilities in Asia. He will be a great asset to our team, and I have no doubt our clients will stand to gain the most from this move. His appointment underlines our commitment to the region here and will play a big role in expanding our business footprint across Asia.”

Moi added: “Gordon’s prior experience in managing a broad range of product lines including management liability and professional indemnity will benefit Markel significantly and he brings with him well-established contacts – valuable as we develop our book of business across the region.”
