US Senate to debate National Flood Insurance Program

The US Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee will today (Tuesday March 14) hold a hearing designed to examine how the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) can be reformed.

The hearing, entitled “Reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program, Part I,” will be led by RoyWright, FEMA’s deputy associate administrator for Insurance and Mitigation. The NFIP expires in September.

SmarterSafer – a coalition of taxpayer advocates – has again described the NFIP as completely unsustainable—which it says is evident by the programme’s almost $25 billion debt to US taxpayers.

Additionally, SmarterSafer says the NFIP fails to adequately deter new development in areas vulnerable to flooding that lead to further environmental degradation, and does not do enough to encourage states, communities, and individuals to reduce their vulnerability to current and future flood risk.
