Markel appoints Dubai head
Specialist insurer Markel International has appointed Leroy Almeida to head up its office in Dubai.
The appointment follows Markel’s application to the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) to establish a company to operate within the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC).
Previously, Almeida worked as senior business development manager with Atradius' cooperation partners in the UAE since 2005.
Ewa Rose, managing director of Markel’s trade credit division, said: “Since we launched our trade credit business in 2010, we have been building out our footprint and we now have operations in London, Singapore, Munich, New York and imminently, in Dubai.
“By its nature trade credit business is international and our clients need access to underwriters on the ground, who know and understand the dynamics of the local market. Our plan to set up in Dubai reflects the increasing opportunities we see in the Middle East. Dubai is superbly placed to look after markets such as Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar as well as having the potential to serve India.
“Leroy has excellent local knowledge and networks and we are delighted that he is joining us in Dubai. We are looking forward to progress our discussions positively with the DFSA.”
