Canopius hires chief underwriter from Liberty Mutual for US expansion

Global specialty re/insurer  Canopius Group has hired a former Liberty Mutual executive as its chief underwriting officer (CUO) for the US and Bermuda as it continues to build out its leadership team in North America.

Coleman Johnson (Pictured) has joined Canopius following three years at Liberty Mutual Insurance, where he most recently served as senior vice president and CUO, middle market, and prior to that held senior underwriting positions at The Hanover Insurance Group and The Hartford.

Johnson has more than 20 years of industry experience. He previously served in senior underwriting roles at Liberty Mutual for more than a decade between 2002 to 2012.

Prior to Johnson’s arrival, Lisa Davis was acting as US and Bermuda CUO in addition to her role as chief executive of Canopius US and Bermuda.

Johnson will report to both Davis and Mike Duffy, Canopius Group chief underwriting officer.
