DAC Beachcroft and partners develop AI to deliver ‘immediate answer’ on motor liability

An AI-powered tool that “delivers an immediate answer on liability” following a motor accident is being developed by international law firm DAC Beachcroft in partnership with insurtech start up Automated Insurance Solutions (AIS) and claims solutions provider Audatex.

The platform, called BAIL, asks insurers simple questions about the motor accident, then asks them to select a road layout image that “best indicates the accident scenario”. It also has an option to add or request witness testimonies. Using this data, the platform’s AI swiftly provides an answer on accident liability.

To confirm the exact location and weather conditions at the time of the accident, the platform is linked to Google Maps and historical meteorological data. This additional information allows the user to produce an accident report “in seconds”, along with the liability outcome.

The platform includes a self-service feature, which means policyholders can input their own account of the accident without needing to speak to a claims handler or investigator.

Peter Allchorne, partner and head of DAC Beachcroft's Innovations Lab, said: “It's easy and intuitive to use, and the question set is entirely dynamic, only asking what’s relevant to return a quick, accurate and consistent decision on liability.”

Elliot Roberts, product management director at Audatex, added: “We wanted to support a machine learning-based solution for the essential and sometimes complicated process of establishing liability – helping claims professionals focus on the cases that require their attention and straight-through processing for those that don’t.”

Ben Taylor, chief executive at AIS, said clients who have been piloting the use of BAIL are “already benefiting from a reduction in operational expense” as well as seeing an acceleration in “what has historically been a very manual, paper-based process”.

He said: “Partnering with DAC Beachcroft has offered a fantastic insight to assist our subject matter experts. The firm's unique position within the motor claims sector, wide expertise and access to data has helped inform our technical team as they ‘teach’ the AI tool the minutiae of the expansive world of UK road traffic liability.”
