Howden beefs up its health and care offering with acquisition

Howden Broking has acquired Medical Professional Risk Solutions (MPRS), a specialist insurance broker for the primary care sector, for an undisclosed sum.

MPRS becomes part of Howden’s existing health and care division.

MPRS was founded in 2014 by James Dunsby and Chesney Phelps, serving medical professionals and healthcare organisations across the UK. It provides accident and health, professional liability, medical malpractice, and commercial combined cover for general practice, private practice and GP federations.

Mark Westgarth, chair of Howden’s health and care business, pointed to the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic as a reminder of the pivotal role both primary and social care providers play in society.

“The acquisition of MPRS is consistent with our strategy of growing and creating specialist lines of business and developing our offering for clients,” he added.

Dunsby and Phelps said Howden felt like an instant cultural fit for the MPRS team, and a natural home for an independent business to flourish.
“We share the same approach to client centricity, innovation, and entrepreneurship, which is fundamental to our future success and our clients,” they said.
