Howden RE brings in Hannover Re vet to launch reinsurance in Germany

Howden RE will add treaty, retro and specialty reinsurance to its existing facultative offer in Germany, bringing in a 33-year industry vet who spent half his career at Hannover Re to take the reins.

Carsten Thienel (pictured) spent the bulk of his first seventeen years in insurance as senior underwriter for Hannover Re before launching a whirlwind tour of Cooper Gay Re, Ed Broking, JLT Re and Guy Carpenter, where he was managing director of treaty for Asia. He had last hung out a sign with his own name for consulting for the past two and a half years.

Thienel will open a new office for the group in Hamburg and be responsible for building on  Howden RE ’s facultative and captive reinsurance business with a particular focus on developing treaty, retro and specialty reinsurance capabilities. After taking the post August 1, Thienel will report to  Howden RE Europe chief Marenco Scholz.
