Pool Re appoints non-exec chairman

Pool Re, the mutual reinsurer that provides terrorism cover for commercial property in the UK, has appointed Geoff Riddell as non-executive chairman.

Riddell succeeds Tony Latham who retires from the position after more than 12 years of service as chairman and 20 years on the board. He will hand over the chair with immediate effect and will retire from the board after the annual general meeting (AGM), which this year will take place on Tuesday 28 June.

Riddell brings over three decades of experience in international insurance markets to his new role. He was appointed to the board of Pool Re, as a director, in August 2015. Prior to this, he held the role of chief executive officer and then chairman of Zurich Global Corporate. He has also served as chairman of the World Economic Forum Insurance Global Advisory Council, as a member of the ABI General Insurance Council and as a member of the Lord Mayor of London’s Advisory Board.

Latham joined the Pool Re board as a director in October 1995 before being appointed chairman in June 2003. He had previously served at RSA Group, where he held a number of senior executive roles, including managing director of the global risks division, over a period of 17 years.

Latham said: “My time at Pool Re has provided some of the most satisfying moments of my career. After 12 years as chairman, I am very pleased to leave Pool Re in a position of strength, where the proposition has adapted to meet an evolved terrorist threat and where the business is extremely well placed to ensure the resilience of the UK economy and the commercial concerns operating there.

“Since its establishment, Pool Re has also consistently fulfilled its founding function, meeting every claim without recourse to Her Majesty’s Government and at no cost to the taxpayer.

He added: “I am delighted Geoff Riddell will be my successor as chairman. He has a long and successful record and will build on what we have achieved to date. I wish Geoff all the very best in the role and thank everyone I have worked with for their efforts over the last twenty years.”

Riddell added: “Tony Latham has had a profound influence on Pool Re since joining in 1996. It is a tribute to him that he leaves the company in such good health, having helped to develop Pool Re to become a leading example of a public/private partnership.

“My job is to ensure that Pool Re continues to represent the leading example for terrorism reinsurance, able to broaden and adapt its proposition in the face of a rapidly shifting risk landscape.”
