Pool Re to host terrorism re/insurance pool congress

Pool Re, the mutual reinsurer that provides terrorism cover for commercial property in the UK, is set to host the inaugural congress for national terrorism re/insurance pools in London.

The three-day event will gather the leaders of national terrorism re/insurance pools from around the world to discuss the operational factors affecting the provision of terrorism risk re/insurance.

Taking place at the Royal Institution in London on October 28-30, the congress aims to drive the debate on issues affecting worldwide terrorism re/insurance and the role of governments in the provision of terrorism reinsurance.

The congress will also provide a forum for the sharing of expertise, best practice and to discuss closer international collaboration in response to new and evolving terrorist threats.

The terrorism re/insurance pools of 14 countries will attend and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) will also be represented. Speakers at the event will include senior political figures, insurance industry professionals and members of the security services.

A broad spectrum of issues and topics relevant to the provision of terrorism reinsurance and national re/insurance pools will be discussed at the congress including: how public private partnerships work in practice in other areas of re/insurance; terrorist threat to the UK; the future of government involvement in terrorism re/insurance around the world; and how modelling techniques are developing in the area of terrorism re/insurance.

Julian Enoizi, chief executive of Pool Re, said: “The re/insurance industry has a long history of evolving in the face of threats and of redefining itself to ensure that it can continue to protect commerce worldwide.

“Terrorism, which is an increasingly global threat, demands a concerted international response and our objective has been to leverage the experience and expertise developed in national terrorism pools to underpin our response to this threat.

“The Pool Re team and I are very pleased to host the inaugural national terrorism re/insurance pools congress, the aim of which is to support initiatives for closer international collaboration and to share expertise and experience to combat the threat of economic loss resulting from terrorism.

“The future of terrorism reinsurance is a question lacking a coherent, international response and I hope that, through working together, we can ensure the most informed and appropriate approach for the protection of our various economies.”
