Tornadoes cause ‘significant damage’ and deaths in southeastern US
A number of strong tornadoes have caused significant damage and deaths in parts of Alabama, Georgia, and Florida in the southeastern US.
There have been 23 reported fatalities in Lee County, Alabama, according to the latest information from catastrophe risk modelling company RMS.
It said the figures “mark the deadliest day for tornadoes in the United States since May 20, 2013, and the deadliest day for tornadoes in Alabama since 2011”.
The death toll in Lee County, Alabama, was also greater than the number of deaths from tornadoes in the entire US in 2018.
Authorities in the affected areas said around 42,000 properties had lost power across Alabama and Georgia, with most of the outages in Lee County, Alabama.
The South Carolina Emergency Management Division said a further 9,000 households faced power outages in South Carolina.
The full extent of the damage across the southeastern region is expected to become clearer in the next few days as official damage surveys begin.
