Marsh McLennan taps insider to drive inclusion and diversity strategy

Global insurance broker  Marsh McLennan has appointed a chief inclusion and diversity officer (CIDO) to help accelerate its initiatives in this area and drive an “expanded agenda for change”.

Moreland Murray (pictured) will now lead the company’s inclusion and diversity strategy to drive “measurable and visible” outcomes in this arena.

He will continue in his role as chief people officer for the company’s corporate functions, reporting to Carmen Fernandez, chief people officer of Marsh McLennan.

Prior to joining Marsh McLennan in 2011, Murray spent 18 years with JPMorgan Chase, where he served as senior HR business partner for several groups and head of employee relations for the Southeast region and US Virgin Islands. Earlier in his career, he held leadership roles with USAA Property & Casualty Insurance and NationsBank (now Bank of America).

“Moreland is a proven leader who has helped to shape our culture for a decade,” said Fernandez. “In this new role, he will accelerate our momentum on I&D and drive an expanded agenda for change.”

Murray added: “ Marsh McLennan is a brains business, and our value is in how we think. If we all feel like we belong, we bring our best thinking to the table. Belonging is core to our I&D strategy.”

Marsh McLennan has recently launched several initiatives to support inclusion and diversity across its businesses globally.

It launched two new affinity programmes aimed at developing new leaders and creating a more diverse talent pipeline: the Black Leadership and Diversity Development programmes, which it plans to continue this year.

Established a fellowship programme to foster a new generation of Black executives who will be fluent in the intersection of business and social justice, RISE, with partners Fisk University and the National Black MBA Association.

Allocated $5 million in funding to organisations advancing equity for the Black community in the US and UK; and, and expanded the reach of Pride Colleague Resource Groups in Latin America and Africa.
